The Main Idea

The Main Idea program is a unique and treasured part of the outreach program of the Agawam Council.

The Main Idea at Camp Agawam was created to provide an exciting and unique camping program for boys between the ages of 9 and 14 from Maine who might otherwise never get the chance to attend camp. Every summer, Agawam welcomes over 100 deserving boys for a free week of camping in June. School principals, teachers, guidance counselors, clergy and directors of youth organizations in southern Maine refer boys who can benefit most from this week of growing and learning that a resident summer camping experience provides. In order to provide continuity, boys are invited back until age 14, as long as the camping relationship remains happy and positive.

The Main Idea at Camp Agawam was founded in 1971, and since its inception, the Main Idea has been operated by volunteers. The volunteers, including Agawam alumni and current staff members, dedicate their time to giving the campers a fulfilling experience.

The Main Idea tradition has continued since the retirement of the program's founders, Dave and Peg Mason, in 1985. The camp's alumni bought the camp and founded the non-profit Agawam Council which remains dedicated to providing quality Maine camping experiences. Camp Agawam and the Main Idea have been featured in a number of newspapers, magazines and on television.

The Main Idea is funded by donations from alumni, parents and friends of Camp Agawam.
