Peter Barger was born in New York City, in 1947. As early as his first year in school, Peter knew he wanted to be an artist. "Art was my first sanctuary, my own private world." After graduating from the Newark School of Fine Arts with honors in painting and printmaking, Barger pursued further studies at the Pratt Graphics Center in New York City. Since 1968, Peter has been a professional artist, not only producing and selling his work through galleries, but also creating illustrations for such publications as Scholastic Magazine, Intellectual Digest, the Boston Globe Magazine and the New York Times Book Review. His most recent illustrations include book jacket designs for a series of Agatha Christie novels.

Barger has  had solo exhibitions plus inclusion of his works in innumerable group shows. Although his work has mainly been exhibited on the East Coast, his audience is a wide one, and much of his work has been included in collections in Canada, Europe as well as Australia.

Barger feels his work relects the influence of Picasso and Matisse. His imaginative, whimsical, and often dream-like etchings have a deceptive air of simplicity. Delicate as his hand-colored images are, they speak with assurance of large subjects with deep feelings of love, friendship, loneliness, and childhood.
