Why Work at Camp Agawam

Camp Agawam, located on Crescent Lake in Raymond, Maine, is a traditional seven-week summer camp for boys. Founded in 1919, we will celebrate our 92nd summer in 2011. Each summer we host approximately 134 campers from 25 states and 6 foreign countries, and employ a staff of 65, including 45 cabin and activity counselors who work with, play with, and live with 4 to 8 campers in screened cabins. We are pleased to have been named one of America’s Best Camps in Richard Kennedy’s book “Choosing The Right Camp.”

A high return rate of both campers and staff really works to maintain Agawam’s traditions from year to year. We were pleased to have many sets of siblings at camp last summer, and a large number of campers who were sons or grandsons of alumni.

Our staff is comprised of college students, teachers, and camping professionals who each summer create a balanced program in a variety of camp activities including: Ropes Course, Archery, Riflery, Lacrosse, Baseball, Basketball, Tennis, Woodworking, Arts & Crafts, Photography, Windsurfing, Sailing, Racing Sailing, Swimming, Snorkeling, Canoeing, Kayaking, Rowing, Fishing, Nature Studies, Outdoor Living Skills and Overnight Trips, Volleyball, Dramatics, and Soccer. In addition to these activities, traditional campfires, vespers services, large group games, intra-camp and inter-camp competition is available.

Instructors and coaches are needed in many of these areas! Most activity instructors are also live-in cabin counselors.

The most unique part of our program is a weekly goal setting program called Katiaki (kah-TIE-ah-key). Each week staff members develop and assign a personal goal for each camper. The goals are designed to either build up or reinforce a strength or improve upon a weakness. One of the most challenging parts of the counselor’s job is the creation and evaluation of these goals. Our alumni point to the Katiaki program as one of the most memorable and influential parts of their summer camp experiences.

Due to the loyalty of our alumni, and the strength of our enrollment, our campus has been beautifully maintained and improved in recent years. Since 1995 we have built a new Dining Room and Kitchen, completely rebuilt our main lodge, rebuilt our Boat House, renovated our sleeping cabins and staff housing, built brand new bathroom facilities, rebuilt our basketball and tennis courts, and developed two new full-sized soccer fields. We are proud of our accomplishments in this area, and the resulting feel of our campus.
